Mark 1:14-26
As he was walking along by the Sea of Galilee he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net in the lake – for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men.’ And at once they left their nets and followed him.
This was a very interesting choice of characters for this role. I am sure some questions were raised by the experts on what they thought our Lord was doing. He certainly could have found some very polished students at the temple. He could have set up a search committee to find some very fine folks to be disciples. But the Spirit led him here. In this most unlikely place he found not the perfect students but ones who would give him a chance. Here he found those who were willing to leave their former life and start a new way of life.
Our Lord still walks around calling ordinary folk to do extraordinary work. Yes we have some very fine people in seminaries and religious houses. They have an important role to play. But so are you. Today he calls you in your own way to come make a new life. May your YES be as unique as you are and in your own way help plant the Kingdom of Love.
