Luke 10:38-42
Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking.
We are not told how Jesus met Martha, Mary and Lazarus but they seemed to be folks that he knew rather well. On Monday of his final week he went up to Bethany with his disciples to visit the trio. This is the one place our Lord could go away from the crowds and he would sit down and say “you guys, you won’t believe what I saw today …. What in the world….” They provided a place where Jesus and his friends could simply be.
You probably have been doing the ministry of Martha, Mary and Lazarus your whole life. The ministry of being a friend. I am intrigued by folks who have not moved far from where they were born. There is certainly is a gift to end up in a place far from home but there is also a gift in growing up with people who you went to grade school with. People whose friendship comes naturally because you carry each others stories. I have mentioned still maintains a friend who she met in 2nd grade. How in the world do you do that. When those two get together, I get out of the way. Today call your long time friend and say thank you. Thank you for being family, thank you for being there when my world fell apart. Thank you for always showing up and thank you for being quiet when I know you wanted to kick me in the gut. You said you wanted to see God…. Hmmmmm.
