Luke 9:57-62
As Jesus and his disciples travelled along they met a man on the road who said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus answered, ‘Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’
I remember being in a formation house and later in seminary and moving from place to place. Yes I had left home and my sense of family and sometimes it felt like I had not arrived wherever I was going. We definitely had the most fan traveling from country to country and indeed the group of religious brothers became the closest thing to family that I knew for years.
What I hear from the Lord in today’s reading is an invitation to detachment. The Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head may seem like a cry but it is an invitation not to be overly attached to anything. We are simply custodians of every thing we have for a brief period. I invite you today to practice detachment even from things that are so dear to you. This is an invitation to see everything as gift. Yes it is a gift to have a place to lay your head.
