Luke 12:13-21
Watch, and be on your guard against avarice of any kind, for a man’s life is not made secure by what he owns, even when he has more than he needs.’
I can certainly attest to this beautiful truth which Our Lord speaks of. I remember very well my life as a monk and long before I joined religious life. We did not have much. It is not that we were not aware of how little we had. Trust me even in the poorest of places you can tell people are on different levels. As a young man I remember wanting some sneakers called North Star. All the cool kids had them. Not one of the seven children in my family had a pair. We were too poor for sneakers.
Along the way we have gained economic freedom to put it lightly but is it ever enough? Today the Lord walks into our lives and gently reminds us to seek the things that satisfy the soul. One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is the gift of contentment. St Augustine said our hearts are restless until they rest in God. Maybe today we bring to prayer ourselves and all those who worry about the things that don’t satisfy the soul. Seek first the kingdom of God…
